What is Postpartum Hair Loss?

Postpartum hair loss, also known as postpartum alopecia, is a common condition experienced by many women after giving birth. It refers to the temporary shedding or thinning of hair that occurs in the months following childbirth. This condition is a normal and natural part of the postpartum period and is generally not a cause for long-term concern.

During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen can extend the growth phase of the hair cycle, resulting in thicker and fuller hair. However, after childbirth, hormone levels, particularly estrogen, drop significantly. This hormonal shift can lead to a larger number of hair follicles entering the resting phase and then subsequently shedding. The shedding is often most noticeable around three to six months after giving birth.
