What causes postpartum hair loss?

Postpartum hair loss occurs due to hormonal changes that take place in a woman's body after giving birth. During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, resulting in thicker and fuller hair. However, after delivery, estrogen levels drop rapidly, and the hair follicles enter the telogen (resting) phase, leading to hair shedding.

The shedding is a result of the body's natural process of getting rid of the hair that was in the anagen phase during pregnancy. The hair follicles will remain in the telogen phase for a period of time, and new hair growth will be delayed until the follicles enter the anagen phase again.

Other factors that can contribute to postpartum hair loss include stress, nutritional deficiencies, and changes in sleep patterns. Additionally, some women may be genetically predisposed to experiencing postpartum hair loss, and factors such as age, general health, and certain medications may also play a role.
